SEVENOAKS GARDEN CENTRE
THIS MONTH’S TIPS ( NOVEMBER 2007 )
If you want to move plants within the garden, now is the ideal time, there is still time to introduce new shrubs and trees whilst the soil is still warm. Use a soil oncditioner and fertilizer to ensure successful results.
Cut back herbaceous perennials now they have finished flowering and compost or shred waster. Continue to tidy the remainder of garden paying attention to fallen leaves – rake these up and compost using compost accelerator and these will make great free soil conditioner next year.
As the nights draw in, house plants require less feed and water, but remember as the central heating goes up and the temperature drops outside, ensure that houseplants do not dry out.
Empty all summer hanging baskets that are past their best and replant for a winter display
Replace summer bedding with winter displays of pansies, polyanthus, primulas and various evergreen plants. There is still time to plant all your spring bulbs but beware because some are starting to sell out.
Dig over boarders. This will allow winter frost to break down the soil.
Listen to weather forecasts; if frost is due cover sensitive plants with fleece or plant covers.Make sure you switch off outside taps too.
Move pots and planters closer to your house. Not only will you be able to enjoy the colours and foliage from your window, but they will also be protected from the worst of the winter weather and high winds.
To prevent winter moths on apples an pears affix grease bands to trunks and stakes and after leaf fall wash trees with organic winter wash
Lift dahlias & gladioli, clean tubers and wash off soil, dry off and apply fungicidal powder and store frost free.
Give greenhouse heater an overhaul for when they are needed.
