SEVENOAKS GARDEN CENTRE
THIS MONTH’S TIPS ( JANUARY )
Tidy all borders, cut back herbaceous perennials and prune shrubs to improve shape and flowering.
Check which birds are visiting your garden and put down the right food for each type.
Winter prune fruit trees, removing crossing or rubbing branches. Cut out diseased wood and shorten over-long branches.
Clear paths and patios of algae and moss – this will stop them becoming slippery.
Now is the time to service lawnmowers, strimmers etc in readiness for the new season.
Repair greenhouses etc in time for the new season.
We are stocking seed potatoes from this month – start them off by chitting in a light, frost-free pace.
Add well rotten manure or compost to beds and borders.
Shred woody garden waste and add to compost heap.
Check that you have sufficient protective fleece and jackets to protect tender varieties.
Turn the compost in your bins to allow air in which speeds up the rotting process.
Water houseplants sparingly and deadhead and remove older leaves.
Winter wash fruit trees to kill off over-wintering pests.
