SEVENOAKS GARDEN CENTRE

THIS MONTH’S TIPS ( DECEMBER )

Put out feeders for birds, ensuring they also have fresh water - encouraging lots of birds to your garden means not only will they eat all the bird food, but will also reduce the number of insects and slugs

Clean out greenhouses, remove all old crops, pots, growbags etc. These can harbour hibernating insects and their eggs. Compost old crops and spread old compost on your garden.

On wet, cold days, tidy up the shed, greenhouse and garage, clean all tools and wash and disinfect any pots, poles, canes etc to prevent disease build up.

After heavy snowfall, gently shake off snow build up.

After frost stay off lawns as damage can be caused by walking on them.

Switch off outside taps.

Cover shrubs that are likely to be damaged by frost with garden fleece or jackets.

On dry days rake up fallen leaves and dead grass, place in the compost heap. Keep lawn free of leaves because they encourage moss to grow.

Pay close attention to the weather forecasts!

Don’t forget your houseplants – turning up your central heating can cause them to dry out.
